IWAS

About IWAS
IWAS (International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation)
is a vibrant and constantly growing Federation providing opportunity for persons
with a physical disability to participate in sport from grass roots to elite.
As a multi-sport governing body (IF), it has been in
existence from 1952 and followed the vision of its creator and leader, Sir
Ludwig Guttmann, in establishing the event now known as the Paralympic Games.
IWAS, throughout its history, has been a generous contributor
to the nations and their athletes, nurturing leadership and skills in their
volunteer technical expert base, and has never lost sight over the past 55 years
of the basic premise for its existence so firmly encapsulated in its motto
"Friendship, Unity and Sportsmanship" and mission statement.
Formerly two separate organisations,
ISMWSF and
ISOD amalgamated in 2004 to create IWAS and continue to provide and indeed
expand upon Games programmes as well as sport specific development and
Championship programmes.
